At around 11:45 this morning there was a pretty big earthquake here. They say the epicenter was about 10 miles from where I live and 8.5 miles deep. They measured it to be a magnitude of 5.4! I was playing around on my keyboard when it hit, and at first, I thought somebody was just stomping around upstairs. I got up to go see what all the noise was when I felt the floor start moving! Being in California, I've experienced quakes before, so I wasn't too freaked out. It was actually pretty exiting, like a roller coaster. It almost felt the the house was floating up and down, or like I was surfing on the floor. Some boxes christmas stuff was knocked down in the garage and slightly squashed my nice copper tubing primary, but besides that, fortunately nothing was damaged and nobody was hurt. However, I had a math class at a community college that was closer to the origin, and when I got there, the whole campus was shut down! And on finals week too! The teachers must be pretty mad! Theres an article on it already:

I was about 20 miles from the epicenter and was cuddled up with a laptop working on a schematic when it hit, by far the largest quake I have been awake for (usually these things happen in the middle of the night). The only interesting here was that our pool had some nice 6" waves going back and forth in it, but nothing too special.
My first thought when it hit was 's*** the big one has hit, I should probably go out in the big open grass area behind my house before it collapses"

I had just landed in San Antonio FROM Los Angeles after driving to LA... it's funny, because we had managed to get an earlier flight (8:45) compared to the 2:30~ flight we originally had... my brother and I saw it on the news while connecting back to Dallas and wished we were there, as our trip ended early, and ended up only going to a classic car shop in LA. (although the car shop had a pristine condition Shelby GT350... that made me happy, but I can't afford $179,500)!

Earthquakes can be entertaining. At least, I remember my earthquake experience somewhat fondly; I was sitting at my desk at work just outside Seattle when the Feb 2001 quake hit. It was a 6.8, but I was more than 50 miles from it. Still, there was quite a bit of that "roller coaster" sensation you describe. As soon as I realized what was going on, I jumped up from my desk and stood in the doorway of my office. Across the hall, a coworker remained seated at his desk while a rack full of computers and monitors rocked back and forth next to him. I remember yelling to him, "Get the f*** away from that thing!" Nothing fell in his office, but machines fell off racks in several computer labs, prompting issuance of straps and other safety measures shortly thereafter. After it was all over, I remember being hit with a sudden wave of dread as I recalled that my 50gal aquarium in my apartment was perched on a very narrow stand, and I had no renter's insurance. I ran home immediately and was relieved to discover that the aquarium had survived (although a few pictures in frames had not). Now I have a house, but don't keep fish anymore!

Yep it was a good-un. Broke a bunch of my picture frames in a loud crash, I thought my book cases had fallen over but they're fine. Little nerve racking when you hear a loud crash and breaking glass.. can't go see exactly what got destroyed at the moment, but all the expensive stuff is okay.
