The display on my six year old IBM Thinkpad A31P has begun to flicker several times per second. Sometimes it will go "totally black", however the screen image is visible although really dim. The image always pops up right after tapping the lid close switch, even if just for a few seconds.
The video card is fine, it can run other displays.
Does this sound like backlight failure?
BTW while the A31P's 60gig HDD and 64MB video card arn't state of the art anymore, it has 768MB ram and a 1.7ghz processor so I don't wanna scrap it.
EDIT:
I should also mention this is still sporadic, sometimes it's fine, other times I can't get it to light for more than a couple seconds.

Yup, that sounds like backlight failure. You should be able to pick up a new backlight tube on Ebay. If that doesn't cure it, you could try a new inverter too.
I like thinkpads, I have an old 600E that I bought on ebay for $300 years ago. It's pretty slow, but it runs XP fine and refuses to die. I got the extra drive bay battery and re-celled it, and with both batteries it runs for ages.
I guess what I'm saying is don't scrap a Thinkpad :D

I think people have tried fixing backlights using white CCFL tubes taken out of their protective casing, might be a bit MacGyvered, but in a 6 year old thinkpad the part might cost more than improvising something, plus a 6 year old laptop is bound to have extra space to fit in such a part...
