I am doing a project where I need to generate some very loud snapping sound, and I decided to use a Marx generator for that purpose. The problem is, I am not sure what to use for my triggering circuit. I know you can trigger the stupid and easy way with an insulating screwdriver, but I want to trigger the circuit electronically, cheaply and simply. Besides using trigger transformers is there another way to trigger the spark gaps? The visual is totally unimportant, I just need the sound. Thanks.

Also, this is a good way to generate the snapping sound, correct?

Get high voltage pulse discharge capacitor and discharge it with triggered spark gap? How loud the snap need to be? More (kilo)joules, louder bang :)

How regular do the pulses need to be? You don't have to use a trigger to trigger the gaps because once one breaks down, the others will break down too. Is this right?

I need to produce around 165dB to 200dB of sound relative to 1uPa, which works out to mean a circuit producing somewhere between 200W to 600W of power. The sound doesn't need to be periodic, but preferably there should be a way to control the duration and the magnitude of the sound produced.

I would say that a large discharge capacitor bank with a triggered gap is the way to go.

165dB to 200dB of sound relative to 1uPa ... between 200W to 600W of power

err, show your working. Each "snap" will have a certain energy, so by W do you mean J, or are you assuming a repetition rate?

Once you have a snap from an arc, there's not really a way to control the duration of the sound.

Do you really need the complexity of a Marx? The same energy produces pretty much the same bang from the same heating in the arc, whether from a high voltage or a low voltage discharge, perhaps more from a short low voltage arc than a long high voltage arc. So connecting all your marx caps in parallel with the first stage and triggering that lot ought to be just as good, if not better, than a full marx.

Edit: So something like this is more suitable?

I think that what he means by '600w of power' is that it would take about 600w of power to get a speaker making that much sound.

To generate 200dB of sound pressure using a marx generator will be tricky, I think that you migt be better off using triggerd spark gab. That works by charging a capacitor (you are probably going to need a bank of electrolytic caps series to get about 2kv with about 500-1000j) between 2 large electrodes that are almost close enough for it to spark, but not quite. The you take a 3rd electrode (this one doesn't need to be big) that is connected to a trigger transformer, which could be made with either a flyback transformer or ignition coil with a 5uf/100v poly capacitor that can be connected across the primary by means of your trigger switch).

A vacuum relay - such as one of those made by Kilovac or Jennings - in the first gap position should do the trick.

So the third electrode is supposed to be somewhere between the spark gap? And I am supposed to create a pulse with the trigger generator?
