Becareful when simply covering the CRT with something and smashing it. This is not the best way to remove the egun as a most of the time (when I have done it) it is damaged by either shards of glass or the entire backend being sucked into the main screen.

What about phosphor danger? I just broke 1 of them and am trying to remove the coils which is a real pain. How do you do it?

*shruggs* The way I do it there is really no danger and the gun is in great shape after recovery, but do whatever you want. Personally I think smashing the tube is a bone-head move because it maks a huge mess and extremely dangerous. And you intend on making a real beam tube in the future or Crooke's tube, you will need the copper anode intact. And even if you drill it then braze it with solder later, the Pb may boil off in the ion stream, contaminating your tube and destroying it along with the vacuum.

Hazmatt, I did do it your way, It works great but I am still worried about the phosphors. Is there any handling procedure s for the e-gun?

try not to handle it because the nickle of the gun is sterile. Best thing you could do is seal it up in a controlled envornment to limit the gasses the metal surfaces pick up and are exposed to. So handling the gun wearing latex would be a good idea.

Phosphors are on the target surface of the screen in front of the grid. Unless you kick in the tube you aren't going to have much exposure, maybe .5 ppb of the phosphor if you leave it alone. Removing the anode cap would be pretty hard without distrubing the phosphor. I don't know about this one. I would probably heat the area until it softens and pull it out, or use a small compressed air source to blow it out as a bubble and crack it off like a glassblower, but it's a real stretch!

I'll be dismantling an old CRT in the not too distant future, and popping the CRT has always been something i'm afraid of! I'll see if I can make a video... I plan to keep it in one piece, take what I need from the monitor, then take the whole lot back to the recycling centre so it will be disposed of properly! Don't really want leaded glass and phosphors hanging about.

The monitor has some scratches on the CRT, so I can't really sell it or use it. I thought best thing to do is get the flyback at least, or if anyone has any other ideas for what I could do with it...?

Edit : hmm, what about popping it from a distance whilst switched on and a picture is on the screen...might make an interesting video?

There was a TV series in the UK a few years ago called the 'secret life of machines'. One episode was the secret life of the TV, and right at the end of the program they set light to a large pile of live TV sets - you can hear all the tubes re-pressurising and some strange picture effects amongst the flames! I'll see if I can upload the ending sometime...

The movie can be made behind an acrilic transparent shielding wall ( I saw this at "Mithbusters"). In this way, you can take pics/movies from small distance....

If you break a living monitor it will smash together all its internals, you could get HV on your VGA cable and blow PC and I dont think that would be fun.
Also you wont probably see mush of plastic and metal monitor's housing.
If you dont fuse the monitor room will probably go dark again as in previous episodes smile

Much more fun would be poppping CRT alone with something (coil/rail gun) or throwing it from height.

You must hide well and protect the camera from shards but I think video would really be good smile

Okay they are both broken using Hazmats method, one of the e-guns I touched so I am left with one, frown I removed the coils with a dremal, and my electron microscope is under way. Hazmat that is a very safe way to kill a vacuum! smile
