Inrush current limiter for DRSSTC

Basically i don't want variac for my DRSSTC and i will turn it on and off with interupter. To limit inrush current to big caps im charging the cap with 450 ohms 20 W resistor for ~4 seconds and then short the resistor with relay. I didn't want to use additional timers for controlling the relay. So i connected the relay to bridge capacitor trough a 1.5 kohm 50 W resistor. When voltage comes to ~240 DC (bridge capacitor) on relay is sufficient voltage for it to short the charging resistor.

The advantage of this method is that its really simple

The bad side is the resistor connected in series with the relay winding takes allot of power and heats very much (this is why i placed it in front of the cooling fan).

Does this KISS method have any drawbacks im not seeing now before i start to turn the IGBT-s to grenades.

I don't recommend this method for the miniBrute until you have done all testing, troubleshooting, and tuning to ensure everything is working properly.

We at eastern voltage research strongly recommend that a variac be used for all initial and fine tuning of the DRSSTC to ensure IGBT longevity.

Even if im changing some things to my liking i will not use this method until the coil will work fine. I only want to put the circuit there so i don't run out of space later.

This method would be used strictly when all proper tunning and testing will be finished, not before. I just want to plan everything

Hi

I used something similar for my audiomodulated sstc. It runs on 311V DC, 2200uF smoothing Cap. The only diverence to my circuit is that I used 2x150V Z-Diodes instead of a resistor in series with the relais (which is a 12V type, of course).
