Scanning Laser (obstruction detection).

I looked into the HeNe laser and it looks promising.

A quick google search came up with this:

Beam Diameter: 0.75mm
Divergence 0.97 mrads

I'm not an expert on lasers but here is my math:

Beam radius: 0.75mm/2 = 0.375mm

Quench Bed Length: 12.7m

Divergence = 2*arctan((Df - Di)/2L)

0.97mrad = 2*arctan((Df - 0.75mm) / (2* 12.7m))

Df = 0.00095m = 0.95mm beam diameter @ 12.7m

A beam diameter that small would be awesome.

For reference, laser beams aren't triangles but are actually parabolas, although using artcan(difergence) will be a pretty good approximation.

Also, the divergence of a laser beams is inversely proportional to the beam radius, so if you run your current laser through a beam expander you will get a much better size at a distance. The easiest way to get something like that is just a pair of binoculars run in reverse, you want a nice low magnification pair (ie, cheep tongue)

The hene would work too, although for the power they are much more expensive and fragile than a diode laser. I am unsure how much the quench platform moves during operation, but if it vibrates a lot a gas laser (hene, argon, etc) would be a poor choice.


One thing I might suggest is looking for a 'fat max' laser level. I have one of these that has a nice large diameter beam that has a very low divergence, only about 1" per 200ft.

With OpenCV one needs to use the exact same camera for sampling as detection. Note you would not need object detection, but rather a simple dynamic pattern matcher. The lighting in the example images also appears to be nonuniform... never a good idea for vision systems. Try a 1000w lamp, and keep it well out of frame.

The beam divergence can be minimized as the above stated... You may have to mechanically scan the trench as a beam-expander will unlikely work for this problem. Also, the green DPSS lasers may prove easier to setup.
