Hello There,

I am trying to build Richie Brunettes SSTC which used class E amplifiers. Please see

Link2

In the middle of the page of the above link there is a schematic link in red color in case some body wants to take a look at it. I hope some of the experts on this website can answer some of these questions. I have to mention that I have built the first three stages already and all the questions for now are related to stage 4.

Q1: As shown in the schematic, the ouput of the push -pull transistor stage is coupled via a 100 nF cap and a variable inductor and a step down transformer to the MOSFET, IRF520. On the ouput side there is also a 330 pF shunt cap and another variable inductor ( Air core) followed by a 4.7 nF cap

a) Are both the input and output inductors air core or only the output one? I have never heard of a variable inductor ( I have heard of variable capacitor).Where can I get these inductors and what range of mH or uH should i ask for?

b) The step down transformer is wound on a choke coil. What gauge of wires should I use to wind secondary and primary? Is the primary no of turn 9 or is it a question mark? Can I use Mn as the material of the choke?

Q2: This question is more important than the first one . Is it possible to test the class E operation of stage 4 which uses the IRF 520 without having stage 5 in place? If yes, how would I test it. After all class E amplifiers are used in AM transmitters so there must be ways of testing it without hooking it up to a tesla coil.

Q3: Is it recommended that I also use a drain cap at the drain of IRF520? If yes how can I find the correct value?

Thanks in advance for those who view these questions

I am attaching the circuit for Richi Brunette's SSTC driver here to make the viewing easier.
