The best things I have found are plastic globes that go over lights. They are indestructible, cheap, and fit perfectly on standard PVC sizes. All you have to do is cover them in al. tape and smooth it completely with the back of a spoon.

For a VDG, a sphere is the best bet. Remember, that the maximum voltage on a toroid is dictated by the outer radius, and for a VDG, you want to maximize voltage. You really don't need much field control as toroids provide for tesla coils.
You can also try going to a local salvage yard to find some unique objects to make large spheres from. That being said, NY Science First sells a very nice aluminum spun 18" sphere for about $100.00 - well worth the money.
