Hello,
I have recently received a used neon sign transformer from eBay. It is a Magnetek 15kV 30mA model. When I got it out of the box, I wired it up, and plugged it in to make sure it worked. While operating, the transformer has a very audible hum to it. It starts off with a higher pitch when power is first applied, then gets slightly lower and then stays there. The transformer does put out a nice orange arc, so I don't think it is completely ruined. I know that transformers do, vibrate and hum by design, but this seems slightly abnormal. I was wondering it this is normal behavior for a NST, and if it isn't then should I attempt to repair it?

P.S. Here is a picture from the eBay auction.

the duty cycle changes as load changes, does it change when not connected and when arc is drawn?

I didn't pay attention to the sound while making an arc, but the above description is with nothing attached to the leads, no arc was being formed.

it is normal, as the arc is drawn it's physical size changes, altering the pitch (small fat arcs compared to long thin arcs)... the reason you can here it at all is due to the fact it runs at 50/60Hz, which is within the human range of hearing...

Yes, that makes very much sense. Thank you for your replies, I just wanted to make sure that my transformer was not dying. Thanks again.

I'm planning on using it for a tesla coil in the near future, and in the long run for my homebrew CO2 laser.

I'm not quite sure yet, I am thinking anywhere from 4-6 inches for the diameter of the secondary. This'll be my first coil, so I am going with a SGTC. No need to go fancy with a DRSSTC on my first try.

Magnetek seems like a fairly decent company. They make several models; various sizes. I have some and the hum is quite soft & moderated: very subtle 60Hz.

Remember these things are used often 24/7 if actually put to work with a sign ....& HV parts are not invulnerable. They should have a small white (2x2.5") sticker on them that says Magnetek and model serial# voltage range and rating with it's specs. There are keys to it's date of mfg, etc. - I believe the date code looks like "M9510" year/month of mfg. The model is the catalog number which indicates mid-point grounding, components/design. Franceformer uses a similar dating code/ cat. number.

IF the thing is making sounds that are actually "unique" I would suggest that you check if the shell screws are all tightened, etc. Or that a small object is not vibrating around before checking it electronically.
