Methods for estimating secondary's wire length on spool

Let's say you have a spool of wire, you know wire's diameter and mass of all wire. What do you do to measure, at least roughly, its length?

No, that's not :) What I'm trying to learn is measuring the wire length on spool having only wire's diameter and mass of spool (without form).

That's a wrong equation, because you get m^5 as length unit. The proper equation would be length = (mass of reel)/[ (area of x-section)*(density of copper) ], there you get m as unit. That was a metod I've used, but I have no idea how accurate it is. With this, I calculated that my spool with 0.45kg of 0.35mm wire has 230m of wire. What safety margin can I use? 220, 210 or 200m?

Dammit, I hate trying to do these things in my head with ascii notation :o)

Anyways, just use the uncertainties of your mass and diameter to work out the error in the usual way. I`d bet that you`ve only got two figures by the time the errors caused by the insulation and reel add up.

I would measure the DC resistance at room temperature if you can get to both ends of the wire. Then calculate an estimate of the number of metres on the drum.

Just get some wire specs.

Here is chart showing wire gauge (which you can determine by diameter) and feet per lb of wire.
