Just an update, since I don't have any 2n3055's + heatsink in my collection, I used a TIP122, a darlington array on a heatsink and drew my first (tiny tiny tiny) arc today, about 1-3mm. For the short duration that I did have the system powered, the waveform of the feedback coil looked a little odd. I'll try to get a picture when the TIP122 cools down enough (a few arcs, maybe 30 seconds made it unbearable to touch the heatsink).
Ran at 15v, 1a using a TIP122, I get a barely visible arc and characteristic flyback hiss, the feedback coil waveform looks a little odd, it might just be my oscilloscope being unable to trigger fast enough, although its a 25MHz scope so I don't know why it looks like there are multiple overlaid signals, even at the smallest timebase.
