Gate Drive IC waveform

I am currently testing the mini brute circuit boards. In order to look at the output of the gate driver IC, I made a 555 circuit that sends out a 5v 100KHz square wave. This wave is sent into pin 2 on each of the two gate drives. The drivers are arranged in a push pull configuration that should output a +15v then -15v square wave. The instructions say to take a differential measurement of the output terminals becuase the signal is not ground referenced.

I am trying to take the differential measurement but I cannot get it to work.
The first thing I did was take one oscilloscope probe and connect the red and black leads across the terminals....no output appeared
The next thing I did was take two separate probes and connect the black leads together, and then connect the red leads on the terminals.....no output appeared.
How do you take a differetial measurement of gate drivers that output a 15 volt high, then 15v low square wave?
Here are the Gate Driver IC's Link2

make sure your power supply - does not connect to your scope probe ground (through the mains), otherwise you will need to power the circuit from a battery or use an isolated power supply.

lets say you are running off a battery, you connect 1 probe lead to the first chip output, and the second probe lead to the other chip output. note, if you are using 2 of this same gate driver chip you will need to invert the signal going into one of them for there to be a difference in output.
Since its an inverting type, you can probably just connect the output of the first one to feed the input of the second one.

This information would be good to have on the "Experience with the Minibrute design" thread.

For differential measurement:

1. Probe 1 connect to "+" of measurement
2. Probe 1 ground connect to Probe 2 ground (don't attach probe grounds to anything)
3. Probe 2 connect to "-" of measurement
4. Set oscilloscope to ADD ch1 and ch2
5. Set ch2 to invert

I'll try that and see what happens

Thanks

I finally got an output. It looks reasonable to me but there is still one problem. Dan's book said to provide the external mod with 5v for 100% duty cycle. I did that but pin 3(enable pin)on each IC still wasn't receiving the 5v input. So to make it work I connected a 5v supply directly into pin 3 of each chip. That made it work but it is only a short term solution. Why would pin 3 not receive the 5v input. Maybe U1 U2 or U3 is damaged. That would be my guess.

I would assume that pin 3 is sort of like the power for the whole chip, and the external mod sends out pulses to this pin, which turns it on and off at whatever prf you want to hear, 100Hz for example. I'll purchase U1 U2 and U3 again because they are probable damaged, that would explain the lack of voltage at pin 3 of each IC.

pin 3 is tied high internally with either a 10 or 100k resistor, I forget which. You can leave it disconnected until you want to use the enable function.

Test and test and test again before you hook up to your mosfets. A parallel capacitance with your scope probe will give an approximation of that the gate will see. There's a nice tutorial on the webs. Try searching "sstc gdt design"
