i would go brass dome nuts on your gap.. i think you will find hardened steel will burn away even faster than mild steel as is contains more carbon.. i use brass door knob and brass domes on mine and it works great!!

Wee!!
I also noticed that the stationary gaps on my rsg got so hot that it melted the plastic standoffs so i came up with a nice precision machined heatsink solution

Tonight i did a demo for a bunch of people. I was pretty good. It still needs some more tuning to get longer sparks but it sure was impressive. here is the youtube vid. Here are some pics of my setup.
I still need to put the rsg under the coil so i dont have as much leakage inductance and i can tap the primary out 1 more turn.
