Oh, i wanted to mention, with my past experience with RSGs, i found that tungsten was the best for wearing down, but brass was a pretty darn good second place! Steel, on the other hand, wore down at about twice the rate it seemed, but it was regular steel bolts you buy from any hardware store.
Anyway, you can easily buy threaded brass rod, so id suggest trying it out if the steel you already have doesn't seem to be holding up.

Lots of work done on the coil. I have hit a couple of brick walls but now i think i have cleared them and work can continue. I made the strike rail along with the motor mount for the rsg and wired up the controller box. I will post pics tomorrow.

Nice!! I always wonder why people use such monster motors for RSG's, do the sparks really brake it so much? I would think 10W or so motor would be enough.

Because big motors look cool.
The sparks don't exert any torque at all: most of the power is needed to overcome air resistance, which can be high. A big disc spinning fast will blow air outwards like a centrifugal fan, even though it has no blades, and it takes power to do this.

Big motors are pimp . I actually was going to use a small scooter motor but it just did not provide inough torque to run that rsg. I payed $25 for that motor and $30 for the motor controller. The motor is rated 1/3hp 1800rpm. The controller can handle motors up to 3/4hp on either 90 or 180v so it is pretty much universal.
