This is my current project that is taking up almost all of my time during the day. It is a big sgtc that is going to be powered by a quad mot bank running from 220v. I am expecting it to produce around 7' streamers when it is completed and tuned.
Here are some pictures of my progress.
Secondary 32" tall on a 6" pvc form wound with 24awg magnet wire:
MMC Capacitor bank 60x 942c16p33k:
Power Supply 4 1200W mot's:
Im getting my variac tomorrow and i have copper tubing and plexiglass ordered for the primary so more will be added shortly

Hey there, TCG: Nice work so far! The MOT bank is looking pretty evil with those big bushings!! What are you thinking of for a spark gap? A simple "leaf blower" or "sucker" gap (or some other air-blast type) would work fine at 2.5-3kVA, but probably not so well at MOT bank voltages. I'm a little surprised not to see you using your pole pig, actually. I think that would probably make your life loads easier.

Man, you are so lucky to have such understanding parents, and apparently your dad is as excited about your stuff as you are. I think I would be shot on sight for thinking about 7' long lightning bolts. My mom had a heart attack from freaking MOT arcs from a 3' PVC chicken stick.
As for the coil, she's beautiful. I love the variac too, where the heck did you get that thing?

I think some people had these capacitors fail due to bleeder resistors touching their skin and causing arcover.
Bleeders should be mounted few millimeters away from the capacitors to prevent this from happening, and it's good to put some barrier in between, at least some heatshrink or PVC tubing.
Apart from that, bleeders across each cap may be overkill. Just a single resistor across entire bank is more than fien to discharge it.
About the layout of your MMC, you don't consider impractical to have such an amount of capacitors all on a single plane if it is going to be mounted into coil?

Well the bleeder resistors are under the 1/4" plexi so i dont think that will be any problem at all. The capacitor bank will be mounted on the coil but i still have plenty of room to put the rsg and safety gap so it will not be a problem.

I got it at HGR Industrial surplus for $99 and seeing that they are located 30 min from were i live i was able to pick it up and not have to pay for any shipping.
