Listening to a radio station in the USA via the web (Real Radio 104.1 Orlando) they recently did an experiment whereby two iron balls are wrapped in aluminium (aluminum) foil and then banged together quite hard.
This produced a surprisingly loud bang and flash.
Has anyone tried this as I find no Google or Youtube references, quite surprisingly.
Cheers.

That sounds worth trying; i wonder if steel balls would work since they're mostly iron anyway. Any idea how hard exactly they were banged together?

They weren't hitting them too hard, just "hard enough." Sometimes they got a bang, sometimes not.
I don't think there's a wrong or right way, just whack until they crack.
I know you have to rotate the balls to get fresh Al.

I'm not sure about the steel balls, unless they're rusty...
They didn't mention the iron balls were rusty, but I imagine they would have to be as the reaction requires iron oxide for the oxygen.

One thing to note is the programme (The Monsters in the morning) has featured Dr Boom from the Orlando Science Center and that maybe a source for more info...

There's an old iron fence near me that has been "uprooted" for years.
I'll see if it has any ornate iron balls I can saw off.
Then again, it could be steel too.

I'm off to "research" Dr Boom.

Cheers.

i once saw this on steve spangler science show, he used 2 rusty "petanque"(a game of sorts) balls wrapped in aluminum foil, i wanted to try it so i bought 2 balls and threw them in a tub of saltwater and electricuted them til they where rusty, it worked just fine.

sometimes i put a piece of aluminum foil on my rusty anvil and smack it with a rusty hammer, looks great! cheesey

I do not believe that thermite can be initiated via impact initiation. The sound may emanate from another source but a true thermite reaction is not (TTBoMK) ever initiated by impact.

However.....On a certain level it MAY be possible to create a "hot spot" with sufficient impact. It would be a darn good experiment but the idea of such a minor impact like steel balls......That's the problem I have. If we were talking about very sever impact creating very high heat the theory may have some validity.

it is possible, but the conditions have to be just right, but not like what quicksilver said... the heat generated may cause just a small (and I mean small) amount of aluminum to have enough E to lose the unstable oxide, causing it to strip from the nearest iron oxide... all it takes is for a very small region to begin to get a large reaction, as a thermite reaction is a spontaneous [chemical definition, not average def] reaction...

I've seen this before, but due to lack of large rusty iron spheres I've never had a chance to try it -.-
Certainly cool though

you can also slam two metal balls against a piece of paper(like this" o|o ") and it will burn a tiny hole in the paper :D
