If I remember correctly, large surface area dissipates heat much better than a large solid mass. The more fins there are, the better and if they are tiny, you can pack a lot more cooling fins in a small area. Small fins dissipate heat more quickly than larger fins.
I hope that makes sense angry

I agree with you. And since i will run my coil at safe current limits and over temperature circuit will be set to very low value im not afraid. Only thing that bothers me will they fit there,, hmm we will see.

Second thing when i play with electronic projects (lash up) stage i use this water cooling and it does wonders. However pushing it into my DRSSTC base would be little inappropriate

Water cooling would be over doing it, besides the cheapest W\c system I've seen was $150 us.

i was just thinking if you use copper tubing as the primary could it be possible to water cool the eprimary by pumping water through it, i got this idea reading how devestating primary resistance can be to the effecency

Edit: I just found 2 new coolers in my drawer. I hope will they fit on board

Th

I have found very simillar cooler recently in the old PC trash, do not have any use for it yet. These coolers look very sexy, however, is this "heat-pipes" technology really so good? I mean, the Cu plate which is in contact with the transistor is relatively thin and the connection to the heat-pipes involves very small area of the plate. Wouldn't it be better to have rather some kind of classics - a fat piece of AL (or ideally Cu) with few ribs ? Does anyone has any experience with this type of coolers?

Well think about it, the component on the heatsink occupies very little space, but it still works well. Even though the copper tubing is small, dont you figure it would still have a large affect? Just a though. confused

My book arrived today.

Book is good quality and i recommend it to anybody. Still no main parts boards and digikey

Now for a question. I plan to use 4 primary supports instead of six. I don't see anything bad in it, except its more simple and easy to make. Anything wrong with it ?

The new Plexy base arrived. I have 2 coolers for the IGBT-s. In 2 hours postmen will come and i hope with my digikey and boards. If that will be the case coil will be 95 % completed this weekend

Pictures added. Still no postmen

Didnot post few days, time to show some updates.

The updates are 3 last photos in the original tread.

But first let me thank Steve Ward which sent me that beautiful big white cap before he escaped to vacation thanks Steve, project would not be without you smile

I mounted most of the things. Wound the secondary, had to give an arm and leg to get a plexy tube. I changed some things from original design to my liking. I will not use a variac also. The cap is charged trough the 4 X 5 W resistors and after 10 seconds when they are charged the relay shorts the resistors and i turn on the interrupter.

I'm using additional capacitor as you can see for low voltage power supply. Basically because im using it to power some fans and experienced a slight voltage drop. The input on 7815 is now 16.9 V. I added resistors in series with fans just to make smaller current draw. If the IGBT-s will overheat i will resize the resistor for big fan.

The last step to do is:

Wind primary
Insert IGBTS
Spark

I'm just considering using a shielded cable instead twisted pair for connecting current transformers. Will it be good or bad?
