Running into a bit of a problem. Well i still havent been able to salvage any IGBT's or SCR's so i'm still working on that. But i also wound the first coil for the boost converter and to be honest i'm not too thrilled with it. does anyone have any techniques that you think work well? i'm winding 22AWG magnet wire around a ferrite core. Thanks in advance =)

Call a local GE facility (not appliances, like industrial stuff) and ask for the "elfun" people. Ask them if they have any SCR's or IGBT's, there the ones who take apart old equipment.

Alright so i hooked everything up and turned it on, The voltage coming out of the boost converter won't go high then .6V..... i can adjust it between .5 and .6 volts and obviously something is horribly wrong. I've narrowed the problem down to the coil i made, or the MOSFET i'm using. Any suggestions?

Its likely that you havent done any calculations for this boost converter, and that you are simply saturating the ferrite core. If you wish to proceed without working out any math, i suggest 1) try upping the operating frequency, and 2) lower the duty cycle of the MOSFET, and 3) adding more air-gap to the core, and 4) adding more windings to the inductor.
All of these things will reduce the possible optimal performance of the converter, but if you saturate your core, then you will get squat for output.
Oh, and you should be using a high-speed diode at the output of the converter (not sure if that was covered).

Checked the MOSFET and i had it wired backwards ><. It's wired correctly now, however the converter is hovering between 4.85 volts and 5.21 volts, and MOSFET is getting HOT. Is it possible that i'm running the MOSFET at too high a frequency? i'll look into the coil next.... might just buy one instead of making it.

I cleaned up this thread a bit. This thread is about phil's coilgun. Do not pile unrelated questions on top of this thread. Start a new topic if there's something new you'd like to discuss.
