Hello people.. I'm building my very first tesla coil. I'm using steve wards SSTC-2 as template for mine. For now, i have only secondary coil. Secondary specs are: 10 cm PVC pipe, 40-41 cm in width, 0.315 mm wire (28AWG) what makes about 1200 turns... I have few questions about schematics..

1. at this schematic http://www.stevehv.4hv.org/SSTC2/SSTC2-03.gif I guess that C2 is tank capacitor. Can i replace it smaller capacity MMC for beggining?
2. How to make GDT (XFMR), how much windings, wire?
3. at this schematic http://www.stevehv.4hv.org/SSTC2/SSTC2-02.jpg, how can i control 494 via music? like from some mp3 or something..
4. Is R1 potentiometer left to the 494 for controlling resonant frequency of 494?
5. What is purpose of BRv+ ?
6. What transistors should i use for Q1-Q4 before XFMR at this second schematic?
7. What is the purpose of antenna?

If i have missed something, please tell me.. Thanks a lot..

The answers to at least a few of your questions you might be able to find in the forum threads. If this is your first tesla coil you could try something a little more simple just to get a familiarity with them, like a spark gap tesla coil or a vacuum tube coil. Good luck.

I agree with you, but i want to give a try with SSTC first... I don't know why but i think that i will do more damage to myself and to secondary.. :)

The gdt should be about a 1:1:1 ration I think 10:10:10 turns.

The audio mod of the 494 is some where here on the forums do a search for Audio mod sstcs.

Yes R1 is a 10K pot.

The antenna is used to "lock" onto the resonant freq of the secondary.

Thanks a lot. Less questions from me.... for now :).. Patriot thanks for your wishes, and of course that i will inform you about my progress. Next step is ordering the parts.. then PCB and lots of soldering :))

That coil was designed to run from either the TL494 as a simple oscillator tuned to the resonance of the secondary, OR use feedback from an antenna to self-tune the system, in which case the TL494 served as nothing more than a noise source to make the MOSFETs switch to start the self-oscillation, and then the antenna naturally over-rides the signal from the 494.

All of the ideas for that setup were taken from Richie Burnett and "Justin and Aron" from hvguy.com, so do a search for these things and maybe you will find more information.
