Hi guys,
I decided to build a simple multipurpose burner for glass and metal processing. It uses only electricity, water and salt (NaCl). The basic concept is very simple as you can see on the scheme. Today I tested first simple prototype. On the video you can see that firstly I had to find the right position for the burner and than it worked quite nice, as you can see melting piece of a spring stainless steel in few seconds. Link2 Hopefully I’ll get proper parts for the burner and will be able to finish fully functional and useful device…
One more video here... Link2

Any ideas questions and comments are welcomed…

Cheers Mates

A bit better concept of the burner with regulation is here Link2

You should search "HHO torch" on youtube. Its the exact same concept, but most have a blowtorch-like handle attached to a hose. They tend to have a lot of pseudoscience around them, but the device itself is pretty cool.

Yours seems to have a good deal more power than most of the other ones, though.

does yours just combust the hydrogen with air, or uses the oxygen too? The torch i made was extremly small, the flame was 2 mm long, it melted a paper clip instantly. People manage to get standard propane like flames.

Hey, thats pretty cool. But how EXACTLY does it work? I can see electrolysis going on, and maybe some kind of electrical arc, but other than that I'm clueless..
I want to try one of these w/ my next MOT....

In my eyes it is simple: plasma created by the electric arc is dissociating the water vapors which are immediately combusted and natrium particles are burned also. I would not be surprise if some extra energy is generated by this process. It is similar like in biochemistry - the citric acid cycle: The fats are burned in the heat of the burning sugars - so in the heat of plasma arc the natrium and hydrogen are burned. The temperature generated by this must be enormous because the ceramics is also a bit melted - something I've never seen before!

Construction hints: The polarity of the system is very important! The jar must be always positive otherwise the system does not work... Also the caps are far more important than the MOT (it works only as a choke which makes the performance more smooth but the system would work also without it)

Ok, thanks. But what exactly is natrium? I guess its Sodium Oxide, but idk..

EDIT: wait a sec, How is the arc created? In your diagram the - isn;t isolated from the + jar due to the water. What causes the arc?

Natrium is the Latin word for Sodium. Its where the "Na" comes from.

It seems that the burner design will not be easy. Look at this melted ceramics! Does anybody know what temperature it means?

Woah, thats crazy!

I just realized something: couldn't just a plain electrical arc do the same thing? how does the salt water help? It seems like a bit much for an electrical torch..

What is a motor foil cap since I never heard of it.
Also, is it possible to use a MOC to replace the 3.3uF 270V AC capacitors? Would it run on 120V AC?

And last question, could a diode from a MOC be used to replace both diode?
