Here's how to get a reasonably constant circular magnetic field (flat) with 8 (or more) discrete coils (vertical). Pls excuse the cr@p drawing, 45s with paint isn't bad. The spaces between the coils allow access for wires and supports. You cannot "project" a magnetic field above (outside) a coil arrangement

hmmm ok sounds like my idea isn't going to work... i was basically trying to flip the field lines for electric and magnetic fields of a pancake coil with the same physical dimensions. sometimes the laws of physics get in the way of fun projects!
