It seems like it would be really hard to solder to the core of the MOT..

I scrape away a little if the stuff that the mot is dipped in and use silversilder and a torch and it solders with no problem.

Hmm, no torch here. I think I'll go with the bolt/screw option, there's already a nice hole drilled in the baseplate.

Question number I-can;t-remember: What do you recommend for a mounting plate? I would use plywood, but I'm worried about insulation. Would that be any risk?

Well i didn't have any problems with my resonant setup. Just make sure none of the surfaces of the mot including the hv output touch the cement or any other surface for that matter. It will start to arc through the cement and might throw molten cement at your eyes or something. It happened to me. Also make sure the wood you use is quite dry. I let the screws i put my mot on the plywood touch the ground and the hv output touched the cement and it spewed molten cement and wire at me. It will also leave black marks on your cement which is no good if you are in your dads garage. tongue

Hmm, I think I'll find some other insulating mount...
Maybe use nylon mounting bolts and use foam plate insulators under the MOTs?

A 3 inch (Dry plywood) seems to work well without problem.

I would recommend that you should get an acrylic sheet to mount it on but a bit pricey

I mounted mine on cutting board with nylon bolts. I also used brass bolts to tie the two cores together. Here is a pic before they were mounted, they are just sitting on a stack of ceramic tiles. Link2

I put these in a ammo can. I have two sets, this one with the leads still attached to the core and another set that I removed the the leads from the core and soldered a wire to the ends so the cores would float . This is the set with the soldered leads. Link2

I'm probably going to go for the acrylic+nylon mounting bolts. The local Tap plastics has pretty good prices, but If not I'll try plywood. Thanks people.

Nice, try to ballast in on the primary side with shorted MOT, you might be surprised that the arcs might even get a bit longer.
