I'm pretty sure you're thinking of Kolas. See this thread:
I haven't seen any more, although Kolas appears to still visit the forum, so perhaps he'll chime in. I think he might have been looking for a pole pig to power the thing!

We were working out the details with this one but there are a lot of technical problems, like the input driver to the grid. This was prooving to be very difficult and kolas was working on a couple of different input drivers. The hard part with the grid drive is giving it input bias of -300V @ ~2A and modulating that with a couple hundred volts of modulation @ ~8A. The heater itself requires 200A, and we figured the B+ supply would be spced. to ~7kv @ 3A. It's a very complicated undertaking because we were trying to figure a way to make it semi-portable. I'm not sure if he's still working on it, but it is one of those that takes a lot of time to do.

hey yeah. i basicly just have the tube and stand for it at the moment. for the time being the project is pretty dead.
Besides the grid drive which is a complex task, just about every other component needed is going to be a rare acquisition. That is the state of things. I will add that the filament powered and drew near it's rated current. I'm still working out the filament transformer primary winding's voltage requirements as it has no markings. The data sheet indicates that the filament of this tube requires about the same power as most 833a VTTC's.

Just an strange thought, but perhaps you could get help for this kind of thing from many 4hv members and make it a community project. That would be if there was interest in such a thing. I hope that that isnt to rediculous an idea.
