I have a nice 5 amp ballat but I guess You coul go a out and grab a 10 or 15 amp thing, I did get mine for free though... it is an actual ballat not a shorted xformer

what is the cheapest way to make a ballast? and If I do draw too much current will a surge protected powerbar save me or am I at risk of killing a computer etc...

I have a but load of old xformers out of old vcr's, home stereo's and all sorts of stuff, find a few high wattage xformers, short the side not intended for 120 and put it in series with the mots. it worked for me untill i found a low wattage one... poof! magic smoke! use a variac!!! no question about it.
note the secondary side wires get hot, really hot, go with a MOT.

Go to swap meets and try to find an old arc welder. I have an old 70a hobby arc welder to ballast MOT stacks and it's perfect. You can even change the inductance.

Ben, the secondary isn't supposed get hot. If it does, it means, I think, and don't quote me that your "ballast" is dropping voltage. Do this: short the secondarys to the core so that they become part of the core. Mine don't even get hot. You should see an increase in performance as it is now limiting current and not dropping (very much anyway) voltage. Anyway, just a thought, most people don't tell you to include the core. Hope that helps anyone.
