A computer PSU might not be able to give you enough power and can be a little complicated to make it work properly (read above). You could always get a car battery charger/starter and run it off of that, it is the correct voltage and you can get them in a range of power levels that will be enough for a car stereo. I would personally stay away from ATX power supplies because even tho they have a power rating on them I have found most to fail (trip from overcurrent) well below what is printed on the box. Also the wires that feed the connectors are no where near thick enough to supply the max current that the average ATX can put out.

If you are trying to run a car audio system as a house system its not gonna work too well, From what I have thus far on this topic the Ps issue is one thing then also there is a remote power connector for the amp, which needs to be held high If I remember correctly in order to even turn on, Also I don't think a PSU with a cap even will work, since most wiring kits for car systems are 20+Amps I know the last system I had required a 100A Jumbo blade fuse to operate plus nice thick 6AWG power wire and 10AWg ground wire, and that system ate up 2 car battery's and an alternator. If you could what size amp and speaker ratings you using?

Seen this: Link2 It says it be made to supply up to 500 amps that should be enough tongue

Ive also heard that car systems in houses don't sound good, I'd go by that as they are not really meant for quality.

Well to be fair if all you want is a "sweet sub" then sound quality probably isn't a priority.

Get a car battery charger, they are less then 100$ and will put out the required current and require no modification or thinking to use.

You'll probably get smoke as well as hum. Cheap car battery chargers are just a transformer and rectifier, no smoothing or regulation. If you want to use one, use a battery too!

FWIW, I've run a car amp off an Astec LPS250 without any trouble. It has a real current limit, not a trip, so you could use it with those big capacitors if you wanted. It wasn't the 12V model but the 5V one that I modded to 12v.

I just bought a PitBull Car battery charger and made all the right connection. When I happen to turn on the power, a safty unit inside the box turns on a light saying that the connection is improper, not turning on. Is there anyway to bypass this safty feature?

Was this with or without a battery in the circuit? See my post above.
