Building new polypropylene capacitor, any suggestions?

I bought a large roll of polyethylene today and i am going to start making an 18 nf capacitor for use with 12kv nst. I am using 8 layers of 4 mil. Each mil should stand up to 500 volts so i have 4 mil times 8=32 mill which is 16kv. Is this sufficient? And are there any precautions i should take? I know to clean the material off and make sure i have plenty of space between the 2 pieces of foil. I am not going to start on it until i get my capacitance meter. smile

UPDATE: I have decided to make numerous smaller capacitors so if the sheeting has a defect or a capacitor fail it will just be a minor inconvenience, not a catastrophe(That is what a big capacitor failing would be in my eyes.).

Since 12kV is an RMS value, your peak voltage is almost 17kV. So, probably add two layers.

Well, i have given that idea up. I bought some of the polyethylene, and it stood up to my nst for a few minutes, so i started making it, and it was so thick even when compressed, a square foot would only be about .5nf.

Oh, my mistake. I was searching for information on making capacitors and I didn't even notice your post was in may.

There are some different ways to build the capacitors that are more "dimensionally efficient". You can make a rolled one or use multiple plates.

Not to mention the overhead transparency rolled caps. They give me i think it was 3-4nf and 28kv. And that is like less than a foot. Of course, they do not last long.. All i would need to do is soak them in mineral oil and vacuum it, but don't need to cause i have the CDE caps.
