Awesome winder! Somewhat more advanced than the one I built recently by pulling the trigger out of a cordless drill and building it into a foot pedal. :) Works well though. Love the doom though, sounds like Disembowelment. (The band not the action)

There is a foot pedal for a wood lathe that is occasionally used in a variety of wood-working applications (I haven't seen it sold outside of that environment) that MAY be much more sophisticated that a "dimmer-switch" concept. It's rather expensive at $39 but does superficially appear to function within a "non-stepper" motor unit not specifically designed for variances in speed..
This same concept may also be used in certain sewing machines (higher cost however). If this is actually applicable to various motors it would make coil winding MUCH more customizable for the individual who doesn't want to invest in custom design for two or three coils, etc.

I don't often post any pics of my projects and you can probably see why, but I thought this might be of use to people out there. What I did was take a 18V cordless drill, pull it apart and take out the trigger and attached TRIAC. I extended the wires between the switch and the motor so I could put the switch down into a dodgy built footpedal. I run the whole thing off a variable voltage power supply that I built. The black thing on the coil shaft is a piece of wood that I sanded into a cam and has some foam on it. This triggers a manual counter every time the coil rotates thereby counting the number of turns. It's all very basic, but it works. A simple solution to Henrys beautiful creation.

I have a similar setup using a 3 phased motor controlled through a frequency inverter, but at low speeds the motor gets too little cooling from its fan.
