Small SSTCs and grounding

I know a small SSTC could be grounded to a big metal plate or left completely ungrounded (not good). But what do you think about a small coil running at perhaps 50 Watts to be grounded straight to the mains ground? IIRC Steve Ward's Mini SSTC (IMO not so mini actually) was grounded straight to the mains ground.

Or if I used an ATX bench supply, could the built-in RFI filters be used, to be sure? I bet there is a RFI filter in an ATX supply.

So far every SSTC that I have seen have been grounded to mains ground (even multi kVA DRSSTCs), theres no problems doing that. But you absolutely cannot leave it ungrounded or the base of the secondary will start arcing to everything.

So I meant grounding it directly to the mains ground without any kind of RFI/EMI filter at all.

There's also one nasty thing with leaving the coil ungrounded: all the metal objects near the coil give you a nasty RF burn when touched.

currently i am working on that same answer also, but i am running sgtc. i tried to ground with one end primary, a big RF shielf from CRT monitor, and a case of power supply, and nothing was better than a one connected with primary.

i also tried it ungrounded but sparks are really small. maybe i just need a bigger piece of metal to try.

I havent seen anyone use an RFI filter on the groundline. Metal objects will give you an RF burn no matter if the coil is grounded or not.
