Hi all!
I have made my first DC MOT Power Supply with Doubler.

A time ago I was try to made one, I made everything but I was have a problem with the Choke (or ballast in some cases) for the High Voltage Out.

Some say it needs to have a few Henry. So I stoped the project. Now I have returned with the project with an idea.
Using my Old 5kV NST as a Ballast.

I was worried about the current, but when I tryed I didnt have any problems with it, the nst doesnt get heat in the secondary.
I used two diodes and 2 cap bank. It have a few problems because one cap is the original MOT Cap, other is one that I have made with 10 200V 220uF capacitor's in series. But it actually works, and works good! The diodes is 7 1n4007 in series, It can handle 1A 1000V Reverse each one, I think its a good idea.

Here is a video:

Some experienced members, comment about using NST as a Ballast pls :)

UPDATE: 19/05/2008

Here I am updating this topic :P
Some PICs of the work, Soon I will make a better work on it.

Wow, that's a very hot looking DC arc! amazed
What are you going to use that thing for?

May I comment a different matter? Lethal current and voltage combination, yet you're holding only wire's insulation and your skin was 1-3mm away from high voltage. Thinking more, youtube is very popular, so there might be people who would try this like as you have done. Oh well.

I guess hes holding the ground wire which is "safe" atleast if the ground wire stays connected... If it breaks loose I will probaply arc through.

Looking at the video - the cable seems to be high voltage - the wire is thin and the insulation looks very thick (is this a cable from a flyback ? ). BUT I agree with Tonic - doing such a thing (and showing it online) is irresponsible. If someone unexperienced see the video and try this with ordinary low voltage cable the result may be death.

Hmm, Yes the cable is a High Voltage Cable that I bought. It can handle 40kV (its writed on it) it have 4,5mm insulation with 0,5mm wire.
But its correct, someone can see and think it can be a normal cable.

About the arc, yes its very hot, I was getting titanium very bright red :P
I plan to use on a tesla coil, but I didnt have good results puting a capacitor on other side, I will post some videos with and cap on the 4kV out.
