Today I started up my tiny SGTC for the first time and I cant help it, im happy and proud! on a personal level. This is the culmination of some months gathering and work and im delighted that its working (read: not burning to the ground ) :D

its driven by:
rectified flyback transformer at about 20 kV
sparkgap is just between 2 wires
saltwater capacitor in a 1.5L coca-cola plasticbottle at 2.7nF
14 turn helical primary at 0.016 mH (calculated)
105 mm tall, ? turn helical secondary at 10.23 mH (measured with lcr meter)
78 mm diameter sphere topload at 4.37 pF
This should all give a resonance frequency of 765 kHz.

It all seems to work fine except there is no breakout unless I wave my little flourescent tube (or something else) near the topload, it lights up and I can draw some faint streamers about 50-60 mm.

without a topload the whole secondary turns into a corona if there is nothing near to draw the streamers, from the topscrew that held the topload there is about 10mm corona that can be drawn to 80mm.

since this would get pretty boring without pictures, I give you the setup :) Once I have found some optimal settings for the primary I will upload some more pictures.

Would more varnish or hot glue around the top and on bare metal parts reduce corona or would it just glow beneath the glue?

edit: too tight coupling problem solved

So you're saying you're getting "racing sparks" ie. sparks on the secondary? That means you have too tight coupling, try raising the secondary further away from the primary.

yes, racing sparks on the secondary.

Thanks, I will try that when the varnish is dry, it deserve a 3rd layer hanging the other way anyway :)
