Hi guys, I’ve just made a very painful and expensive experience. I left my plastic box with my collection of power mosfets lying on the table (btw. as usually…). Recently I finished small SGTC powered by fly-back and played a lot with this small beast. Unfortunately, probably the RF and EMG pulses from this stupid little coil destroyed all the FETS in the box! They are all dead in a very funny way. By simple measurements using a multimetr all looks fine, but in reality they are all like half open. It means all the transistor conduct 1-3A between drain and source without connected gate.

The death list:
IRFPC60 – 4pc
2SK3304 – 6pc
In total 10pc of dead FETS without any effect…I hate the world cry

At least sending a picture of the killer in action…

Did you try shorting the gate to emitter then apply some collector voltage? This happened to me with some transistors, these things can hold gate charge a for a long time.

just to give you some hope... neutral

Nice try but it didn't work. Now, I can use the transistors only as non-inductive power resistors mistrust If somebody has a use for such componenets I can produce them in large scale wink God, I'm so angry!!!!

Hi Mates
very unpleasent indeed. I had simmilar experience with my SSTC (I destryed the same way 4 X irfp460 frown. Otherwise nice looking coil.

Thanks for the headsup, I better clear the worktable of sensitive components before starting up my first coil.

The gate dielectric probably got messed up, thats why i always wrap my fets/igbts in tin foil for storage.

Dang, that sucks massively!
I have this electronic game in one of my plastic storage drawers (no idea why it's in there), and every now and then when I turn off my mini magnifier coil, the game will randomly start up. The drawer is about 8" from the cord running to my power strip, so there must be a pretty big RF field around the power cord. I even have a line filter, but it still does it sometimes. There must be a tiny EMP that occurs when I suddenly switch off the coil which is just big enough to create a voltage on the transistor that turns the thing on.
Rarely, the garage door opener light will come on as well. suprised

So, does anyone have any tips on how they personally store their components against this?
