You may want to try this: Get rid of the injector, and put the projectile directly between the rails. Then use some kind of triggered spark gap or switch (with wide contacts) to trigger the gun. But make sure the projectile is in full contact with both rails, ie you can measure continuity across the rails.

If it still does not fire, then that means you are just not producing enough force to launch the projectile.

looking at the gun, i seems a little too big caliber wise for the 3.5kJ that you have available.
is that 1" bar for the rails and a 1" cube you are shooting?

if you use a smaller caliber and have the rails closer together, it will give you much better flux density.

but first beef up the current path.

Saying jacob's ladders work best with shielding to protect the rising plasma from being blown away, I'm thinking the pre-accelerator in your railgun may be blowing the plasma past your projectile, causing it to weld itself onto the rails. Try shortening the burst of air by reducing chamber size in your pre-accelerator, hopefully aiming for the chamber to depressurize by the time the projectile reaches the rails.

hello, not to jack this thread or anything, but would anyone know where to get some magnetic field simulation sowftware, because I'm presently looking to make a brute railgun (like a 6 foot long break timespace strength gun) and really have no interest in optimizing my guns parameters myself.

try Femm. its freeware, and is good for most coilgun/railgun simulations. If you are willing to pay some bucks, then you should try getting a 3d simulator, which will allow you to measure the B field much more accuratly

You won't be able to completely avoid optimizing parameters. Things like capacitor ESR and varying resistance of solder joints will throw you off in the end. Also you will need to tune it to do well when in ranges of variables changing during firing, such as "how much plasma is there this shot?" I expect you to have to choose a more robust local minima.

I've had to clean this thread up a bit. Please stay on topic from here on out. In the future, create a new thread for a new discussion. All future discussion in this thread should be about the original poster's railgun.
