Yesterday I read the latest issue of "MikroBitti", a Finnish computer and new technology magazine. There was an interesting article about Thorrn Micro Technologies, who are developing a "solid state fan" for computers. This fan utilizes corona discharge and "ion wind" to generate the air flow. The fan volume is less than 1cm^3 and it's enough to keep a 25W heat source cool. This graph looks also very promising.

I have seen here on brazil one of that Ion Coolers. I think its a good idea for some applications, because you can eliminate all noises. But I think in some computers and other thinks we still need the Common CPU Coolers. Too many heat dissipation.

But what woryes me a bit it the ions escapeing and building up static charges,a not very good thing in a computer. Also what happends when these things gets cloged with dust? Arcover and catch fire?
I agree with Antonio - to generate a decent airflow (even for 25W) you/they will be generating a lot of ozone, and for a computer in a closed room - bad things can happen
