On all the big tesla coils I see, the primaries are wound flat instead of cylindrically around the secondary. I would think the latter would give better coupling. So why the flat primaries and tall secondaries? Thanks!

Plus, a cylindrical primary is basically an autotransformer; the unconnected end can reach voltages far exceeding the primary tank voltage, which can entice flashovers and other badness.
