The insulation on the flat wire is usually a little thicker...but it's still magnet wire, and the small loss from this is more than made up for in how tight the coil can be wound, and there isn't that air-gap all the way around the wire like with round wire....

It is a little expensive....but so worth it:

eBay

The seller lists new wire each time the one listed sells...so keep an eye on his items.

And easier to wind!!

Hey Fast.... I just bought sme of the wire on ebay. really looking forward to getting it and winding some flat wire coils. I have a question, on your rocket experiments, did you glue the AL slug to the bottom of the rocket base ? Or was the rocket independent?
Thanks again for the help

I used ProBond polyurethane glue, the same stuff I made the coil itself with. The slug is always attached to the rocket for these reasons:

1. I'd never find that slug if it went separate
2. The rocket needs the weight for added momentum...I've already used the energy to move the slug, might as well send it with the rocket
