Does a rotary spark gap offer the longest streamers if all other variables are constant?

If I wanted to build a synchronous or asynch SG, what is the rough target RPM if I had 2 pairs of gaps (4 electrodes on the flywheel)? Maybe a better way of asking is how many sparks per minute...

For a RSG and AC input, the best BPS seems to be 120 for 60 Hz mains frequency, respectively 100 for 50 Hz. For DC input you can run an ARSG as high as you want.

If you are using a pole transformer or similar (i.e. potential transformer), i would recommend an ARSG. These offer a lot more play and variation with the output arcs and a lot more "coolness" factor than just a SRSG. ARSGs can typically run anywhere from 60BPS up to 240BPS +

My favourite spark-gap Tesla setup is an asynchronous rotary gap with a DC resonant charging supply. I think it can equal the efficiency of a 120bps sync rotary, but doesn't need a sync motor, and you can set the breakrate to anything you want. My spark-gap coil has a MOT-based power unit that puts out 10kV DC at 0.1A.

An async rotary with AC supply, like EVR recommends, makes some pretty cool noises as you vary the breakrate and it beats with the line frequency. But you have to be sure and keep the breakrate well above 120 at all times to avoid voltage surges that could fry your HV transformer. DC resonant charging avoids this risk. But then, so does a properly set safety gap in parallel with the rotary.

YMMV. but I still think the best performance is done at 300BPS. In the case of an AC charging circuit, it should be configured for equal bangsize and will then look and sound like this one, which is doing 6 footers inside a faradays cage.

Maybe my little program can help you...

I havnt put a lot of time into this program, so it may not be the most user friendly.

To answer your question...
In a "usual" configuration of 4 electrodes on the disk and 4 stationary electrodes: 1800 RPM = 120 breaks/sec. (120 breaks/sec is your target for a sync gap.) As mentioned an async gap can run at any speed you want. Always use sync gaps with NSTs
