I've had my 125 kv @ 300 ma X-ray transformer out of the can (& oil) since November. The tank has been refinished & the filament transformers & diodes have bee removed. I will have 10 gal of Shell Diala A transformer oil soon.
I was thinking about using my radiant heater to warm up the core & coil to help draw the oil into the transformer as it cools. Sure don't want this thing to crap out the first time I energize it.

I think you really want to use a vacuum here to draw out any residual air. At 125kV I suppose that small air bubble remaining on the windings would cause corona and break down the isolation sooner or later.
I don't know whether the enclosure of the transformer allows you to attach a vacuum hose directly (presumably they have to do this at the factory too, right?), but if not you can just put the whole thing into a big plastic bag and evacuate that. This is what people to when constructing carbon fiber or fiberglass parts, so I suppose it would also work in this application.

At this high voltage, the vacuum thing is probably the best bet. OTOH, you can probably do a fine job by just pouring on the oil, then shorting the secondary and running a couple of hundred VA into the primary for a few hours to warm it up and lower the viscosity of the oil, hence encouraging it to creep into all the right places.
I'd love to hear other ideas, too. I've got a few un-oiled trannies sitting around and have often wondered about the "right" way to do this. With big pole pigs, my inclination would be to just dump the oil in, let it sit a day or two, and then party on
