I read somewhere on this forum that it is technically possible to change the the color of your breakout by placing a neon tube or something equivalent as a breakout point. Is this true?

There are a few ways you can do it. The most common is to put a salt on the breakout point, somethng with chlorine for yellow, strontium for red, copper blue, etc, etc. The problem is that as the water (and the salt sometimes) is vaporsied you loose the effect.
I found that using some kinds of glass (specifically, that of a ne2 neon bulb) has enough free ions running arround to give a nice yellow output, but it doesn't evaporate like salts do
It also works to put random objects (plastic, organic matter, etc, etc) on the top and see what happens. Putting pvc will usually give all sorts of neat colors as it bursts into flame, just be very careful of the toxic fumes....
