I made a winder out of a thrift store paper shredder and wrapped my first secondary. Not too bad for a shoestring budget.

There's brief explanatory text and more pics (and pics of the resulting secondary) at http://www.3rdgendecals.com/tesla/redneckwinder.htm

Not bad, Besides I think thats what most of us wind with, with the exception of the folks who have a lathe and wind coils on.

Coil looks nice though!

BTW looked at your site, and your gazing ball....Looks like on from wallmart that is plastic with foil coating. Imagine you'll find out when you fire it up.

Believe it or not the gazing ball is actually metal, though magnets don't stick. There's a little hole in the bottom and I checked by reaming it with a razor blade. It's funny, I got that little 6 inch ball because I was only going to wind 12-18 inches or so for my first coil, but then I got carried away and wrapped the whole thing!

When you wind you don't hold the wire down? I have to hold the wire as its winding and guild it into place. I made a controller from mine. All it does it ramp up the meter speed and when I take my foot off the pedal is ramps it down but at a faster rate. The motor I use is an old cordless drill that I gutted to remove the internal 555 timer based speed controller.

I also used my hands to keep a steady tension while winding; I just took the pic during a break. I actually used a piece of soft plastic, as my thumb nail was wearing out.

I failed to appreciate that a longer distance from spool to secondary would make the winding angle more stable. I had it too close, so I was constantly moving the feed spool around as that was somewhat erratically wound.

The variable speed drill controller sounds like a much better idea.

Thanks for the tip about non-magnetic steel. I'll stop badmouthing the sphere immediately.

Finger nail..huh, I usually use the fleshy part of my thumb with enoungh pressure, the skin pushes the wire tight against the previous turn and the downward pressure holds the wire in place, but then again I do wind my coils by hand...no motorized here, luckily I've Only made 2 coils. =P
