lpfthings... The small 12V DC supply is from an LG LCD monitor. As I have access to unused 12 - 15V 4 - 6A PSUs, that why I use them. The actual case with the balls is a standard Maplins project case. The balls are nickle plated drawer knobs from B&Q (UK)
Spark... Yes, the amp on the board in the picture is an LM386, but the one I used in the video is an LM380. (2 Watts?) I generally use what's on the bench at the time. When I've made the stereo version, I've used the NE5532.
... ... Good advice and taken on board. I agree with the base bias and I'll try it. I only use the 2N3055 for the switch as I have a bucketful from years past. I'm sure I could use many types. It gets warm, but not enough to add more heatsinking as it is. However, once I've lowered the resistance a fair bit, a chunk of ali might come in handy.
