Ive been wanting to make something like this but with variable duty cycle and frequency to drive things like ignition coils and alike.
I wouldn't use relays because they would ware out faster then semiconductors and it would not cope with high frequencies.
In the end I couldn't be bothered with variable stuff so I just switched a FET with a 555 timer, where the ignition coil is in your circuit I made the output but with a different power supply. It worked well until I pushed the FET too hard at 4A at 40V.
