hi all,
i am not a chemist, so please bear with me. i am trying to make a vanadiun redox battery from scratch. all i have to go on are the patents. i have finally located some graphite felt for my test cell. this bit should be fairly straighforward. i can see i am going to run into trouble making the electrolyte. any electro-chemists care to try and help me try to work out how/if i can do this? will post a link to the patents i have dug up so far if anyone is interested. you cdan buy vanadium redox batteries but only if you are a telco company and have the odd 7000 dollars burning a hole in your pocket. they reckon about another 5 years b efore they trickle down to the likes of us.

The diferent states are diferent colours

Various oxidation states of vanadium ions
It is known that vanadium gets the oxidation states +2, +3, +4, +5. To observe the colours of these states, ammonium metavanadate (NH4VO3) can be used as a starting agent. It must be acidified beforehand so dioxovanadium(V) ion, VO2+ (yellow +5 oxidation number) is produced. In alkaline medium, the stable form of vanadium(V) state is VO3-.

Adding zinc powder and concentrated hydrochloric acid continuously, VO2+ is reduced into blue VO2+.

It can be seen that during the reaction, the mixture is green in colour as the original yellow of the +5 state and the blue of the +4 are present.

Continuously adding Zn powder and concentrated HCl, blue VO2+ is reduced to green V3+. V3+ is then reduced to violet V2+ by Zn powder and concentrated HCl again.
