Hi all.

After yet another pendrive got fried (!) by a flaky USB port I have finally seen red. What I need is a little plug-in
device which displays a row of LED's indicating USB port integrity as well as being correctly detected by the device under test.

It would have to display:- 5V within spec under load test (100mA, 500mA and 600mA) for high load devices, voltage reversal, ground fault (yes this is common), presence of inverted data lines, and missing data lines.

This would also have a useful application for USB port identification on EEE's and other USB-enabled devices (shows activity on port and pinout)

Advice please? Am looking into publishing this as an EPE project.

It seems like it should be relatively strait forward to rig up a microprocessor to do the dirty work. I it might be easiest to just make it pretend to be a usb HID device, so when you plug it will just type out the data you are looking for. Open notepad, stick in the key, read the results...

As to the various tests, I would use a pic with an internal A/D (but make sure to use an external reference) that will measure the voltage across the bus. Then have a little fet connected to one of the gpio to connect a 10r resistor across the bus and note how the voltage drops.

For testing data lines, you having a device that tries to connect itself should confirm proper pinout.
