Hi,

When does it become necessary to use a ground rod for a tesla coil?

My coil is using a 15kV NST @ 30mA. Im going to be using a strike ring too.

Here is a pic of it so far.

Thanks

To keep everything nice and safe, you want to have a dedicated ground for your Tesla coil.
Everyone I've seen anywhere that has TC info recommends having a separate ground than that of your house ground.

With a 15/30 NST, you will want to run it outside or if anything, in the garage on windy days.
You will want to have the ground close to where you plan on running your coil.

The bottom winding of your secondary as well as your strike ring will connect to this dedicated ground.
Some folks dislike the idea of driving an 8foot ground rod into the yard, but I know a trick for that.
But if you want a dedicated ground without thew trouble, then you can use several smaller rods driven to a more shallow depth and then connected together.to form a ground ring.

With a SGTC, IMHO, you should have a dedicated ground.

Ok, thanks, Im going to be demonstrating it at school. So I was hoping for a way that I might not need to use ground rods, but if it comes to that then il just have to.

Only other thing, is that I wanted to build a choke coil, how does one go about determining the number of turns and diameter in a choke coil?

Thanks alot!!!!

Is it at all possible to run it inside though? Im using a RF filter too, I dont know if thats gonna help me at all?

I really want to demonstrate it at school, because all this work to just show a video would suck :(

You want to use a counterpoise. Here are some relevant threads.

or just run a forum search for the word "counterpoise"

I read through those topics, but im still a little confused on a counterpoise. Would the ground wiring be like this?

Thanks!

It would be used just like a dedicated rf ground would. Just connect the secondary and strike rail (if you use one). Ground the NST to the mains ground.

To clarify, NST ground and secondary ground are not the same.
NST ground to mains ground.
Secondary ground to either a water pipe or a rod driven into the ground or a counterpoise.
I use the framework of the garage, the whole thing is made of steel.
