I have seen 1.5MV models or maybe even 2MV. The monster power lines don't get even close!

In another post I mentioned that I have some from a correctional facility that had an evaluation (they did NOT adopt any including Taser's product) and those were NOT what is available via Ebay. These was some serious items.
It seems it's hard to really get a handle on what voltage they really operate on. many are constructed via a pulse transformer. In the cheaper ones (I have one that did even make the cut, that I did pull apart) they have a comparatively simple circuit. Many of them use what appears to be 'hand made coils" at the terminus.
It may be possible to drive these with another hand-made coil and a bit more current via more batteries and achieve a larger arc but they don't appear made for any continuous usage.
However the circuit board can give you an idea of how the voltage is achieved and that general principal is a good learning tool.
the really high quality ones use very high-end components. Costly zener diodes and transistors with unique heat sinks that are designed for long term use (abuse inn this circuit design). The biggest differentiation with those designed for law enforcement and those designed for animals (yes, there are some of those that were evaluated in this group) is the current. Some operated off of "C" batteries!
As an aside, the lack of adoption in the correctional market is due to not only Amnesty International's expose on the abuse of such weapons - but their actual lack of effectiveness in many situations and their potential for fatalities (Taser's darts go across the chest & the batons are perceived as overly brutal).
