I've been reading Richie Burnett's page quite a bit and I'm having some trouble conceptualizing some of the Tesla coil's primary circuit.
When the gap fires and the primary rings, is the ringing still occuring while another mains cycle takes place? How long are we talking about between primary notches?
Also, does the primary voltage ever (theoretically) exceed that of the transformer feeding it? I've read that a common mistake is to keep opening up one's spark gap more and more, yielding better performance until the NST finally dies. I assume this is just because you're firing closer to the peaks (and troughs) and thereby working it ever closer to its maximum voltage. And if the gap does NOT fire, does the primary voltage climb higher on subsequent mains cycles?

With a 60hz tesla coil running synchronously, you're looking at about firing at 120Hz or once every 8.33ms. The ringing (where you would see primary notches) occurs at the resonant frequency of your coil. For a 100kHz coil, this period would be 10us.
So no, this ringing does not occur through another mains cycle. Energy will swash back and forth until the spark gap quenches at one of the primary notches.
