Hmm, I had a failure with my pulsed SSTC, God knows what happen there, i suppose that the GDT ferrite is not quite good. After a time got bored and with sstc parts i built a ZVS flyback driver. I remembered a discussion from the old HV forum about the advantages of separate voltage supply for FET gates, so i tryed myself. The results are quite good, nice healthy hot arcs. I will have a new HV source to play at least.

That's not royer, this is ZVS drver (good old) Royer uses separate feedback winding, with voltage offset on one nd gates on other end (you've probably built 2N3055 flyback drivers).
I have miniature SSTC driven by royer (but with mosfets) and it showed good for its size.

Ok, i changed the thread title. The design was presented to me by Vladimiro Mazzilli as Royer, so I used this name for all the circuit variations. I dont' want to spread confusion, so I will use the "zvs driver" name instead.

I think ZVS is not very correct either, since anything that switches at zero voltage is a ZVS, so a DRSSTC, and induction heater and 50% of the other projects people build here could be adapted to drive a flyback and would be ZVS flyback drivers. I propose calling the circuit Mazzilli Flyback driver, since he seems to be the one how has pioneerd this particlual circuit.

I think mazzilli flyback driver is a good name for it. I used to think that it wasn't a Royer oscillator, however, I looked at a bunch of application notes for CCFL drivers, and they use a very similar circuit (WITH the resonating capacitor) and still call it a Royer oscillator. :-/

Mazzilli Vladimiro was the first who adapted this circuit for flyback and SSTC use. It was released on Alta Tensione server on march 2003. Since then, many others built and enjoy this little toy. Andrineri presented it on HV forum board and took a lot of interest.

I think the name 'ZVS' was simply taken from the creator, as he initially called it like that. Its sometimes misnamed for royer but I dont really know what it really is. I needed some time to dig up the topic in archives, hope nobody will take amiss:
As I figured out Royer is usually considered be simple, relatively lossy driver with 1 or 2 transistors with separate feedback, wich is directly biased with divider and connected to base/gate.
I had a failure with my pulsed SSTC
Maybe you can show it in a new topic (TC gods like S. conner and others will most probably help). I dont think arguing about Flyback driver names helps anybody much

You started the discussion about names Firkragg... I know what mistake i have done with my SSTC (I talked with Mazzilli). Have to buy the parts and make it again (because the old parts I used for this ZVS driver). When it will be ready, it will have its own thread of course.
