This is an x-ray transformer that I have had lying around for years.
It comes from an x-ray head with tube enclosed and is rated at 168V in 125kV out.
I ground it out of the lead lined container.
Unfortunately the HV winding was open circuit but still gave a 1 inch spark at 100V. I sort of hoped it might do better when I got it under oil but of course it didn't.
It was drawing about 5kW to get that 1 inch spark!

Sad to hear that frown

Another of those so-much-for-nothing moments. Sometimes you put great effort to salvage or rebuild something like that H.V. transformer hoping it works.. and then nothing.

I try not to look at it like that. I now know how to get one out and have an idea of the internal construction and wiring. For example the integrated filament supply.
I could also remove the HV winding which would leave me with a large single ended transformer on which to wind other things.

You always learn something for your efforts.

Yesterday I found 3 MOTs next to the road. Then I woke up. angry

Anyway, I was always wondering how much continuous power can these Xray transformers take?

Heh, that happened to you too? I dreamt that I had two dozen MOCs in a box somewhere in my room, and that I just had to find them. Ever have the feeling your hobby has become your life? tongue

I guess you live in the US?

Here in central Europe I haven't seen a SINGLE thrown out microwave, even in scrap yards etc.

I stripped 12 MO's recently to get more shed room. All side of the road jobs.
Problem is I gave myself a persistent case of tennis elbow after I sprained it throwing left over MO cases off the trailer at the tip.
I know that you will feel very sorry for me in Central Europe sad
The current x-ray transformer was a throwout at the local radiology repair place although I also bought some scrap stuff too. The 60kV 300mA transformer was a freebie from the physics Dept. but was not easy to get off the trailer with its 300kg.

I get mine from recycling centers. I just ask for the "nasty" ones (you know, the rusted out, filthy and/or smelly type) and they give them away. I've gotten something like 30 microwaves this way.

If you just rip the innards out and don't look into the cooking cavity ( ill ) it's relatively painless.

Is all that weight from transformer/oil/casing? 300kg sounds *really* heavy for such 'small' transformer. Maybe there is some lead shieldings?
