hi all,
i have done a bit of reading and now have a rough idea of what is needed for a drsstc. i want to start with something that will use 240 volts 16 amps to start with so i can run it off my 4 kva genny. i have got the mmc caps and am still undecided about the IGBTs at the moment. the plan is to start fairly small but with an option to increase the power later once i have got the thing running propely. i am planning on a 12.5 inch secondary around 55 inches long as i have access to that and i have got enough wire to wind it. with a resonable size toriod this should get me in the 45/50 kHZ area. i only want to do the drive electronics once if i can. i was going to use steves Cs PLL circuit. i have read datastreams info on GDTs (good article james) i want to make it all solid state eventually but can start with a MOT doubler as i have tons of MOTs lying around. having trouble finding any filter caps . what sort of value should i be looking for? assuming a 2 MOT PSU? i could make a smaller secondary to start with. there is some 6 inch blue pvc pipe i might be able to get hold of,as they are laying new water mains in town so might be able to scrounge an off cut. think i might have enough .5mm wire to wind that size as well. how flexible is the DRSSTC design to different configarations? i can of course adjust the mmc size easily enough but what about the electronics? i like the idea of using bricks but realise they have drive problems i wouldnt get using TO 247 based IGBT's
had a quick scan though dans book but have yet to read it in depth. very nice book by the way Dan. thanks.

For the size DRSSTC you seem to be proposing, not even those 40N60 SOT-227 bricks are going to cut it, let alone wimpy TO-247's. You are going to have to go with at least CM300's as a minimum.

hi dan,
if i go for cm300's could i still use a smaller secondary to set it up? i suppose is what i am trying to say. of course what i should do is build a small coil first rather than try and go for the big one straight off. i have the remains of my first SGTC circa 1998, gosh i must be an old timer by now hehehe, so i could use that. could i still use the control circuit on a bigger coil?

You could, but just make sure the switching frequency is compatible with the devices you are using. The CM type IGBTs typically run at lower frequencies than those SOT-227 devices. I'd try to keep less than 100kHz with those CM bricks. The SOT-227 types (such as the 40N60's, etc...) can run almost up to 300kHz.
