MMC Capacitor AC vs. DC ratings

Hello all,

In the process of building a small MMC for my DC resonant coil. The capacitors I have selected are 0.5uF 1000VDC metalized Polypropylene. capacitors

I plan on using 20 in series, giving 20,000VDC and 0.025uF. I am running the tank of the coil at 8,000VDC (single MOT, voltage doubled, then that inductive kick effect = 8,000VDC at the primary).

My question is, there seems to be some conflicting opinions on which ratings (AC or DC) should be used / considered when designing an MMC. Which rating should be used? Isn't the AC rating on caps for 60Hz and is much different at RF? Is 20,000VDC going to be enough for TC duty? If I send these to MMC heaven, I will just try something different.

I used those caps in an experiment to see if they would work in an MMC.

The Caps failed miserably and even immersed in mineral oil they did not hold up.

I would advise against using them.

Newark has some inexpensive .33Uf CDE caps like the Geekgroup uses.

I would go with those if you are looking for some caps.

Regarding the original question, if you go here Link2
and click on "General Information" you will get a pdf file,
Go to page 5 and look at the third waveform - just like a TC.

When I did the math it turned out that for 100 sparks per second in a typical SGTC the dc rating can be used.
(With Arcotronics A72series capacitors)
You can use the document to estimate your capacitor performance.
